Improving access to sports and recreational opportunities for Latino children
Park City Community Foundation aims to identify gaps and issues within our community and play a role in solving our most challenging problems. We launched the Solomon Fund in early 2017, addressing the Latino community’s limited participation in athletics in the Park City area. We believe that increasing access to sports and recreational activities for children creates a more inclusive, integrated, and complete community. Currently this initiative focuses on 5 to 12 year olds, but this may change as the needs evolve.
We have identified three primary barriers: communication, transportation, and scholarships/gear. Park City Community Foundation is actively working to address these challenges and we have already seen small successes throughout our community. We continue to ask ourselves, how do we effectively and broadly address these and other barriers?
Our goal is to increase access to mainstream and team sports and activities. We would like to see children’s participation in athletics better reflect the makeup of our town. Our goal is to reach 21% Latino participation in programs that are currently being offered in Park City, mirroring the percentage of Latino students in our school district. It varies by organization, but currently, they have anywhere from 0% to 18% Latino representation.
OUR CHALLENGE TO YOU
We recognize that there is not a universal model to address this situation, and would like to put the question out to you, our community: “How can we improve access to sports and recreational opportunities for Latino children?”
We are open to all ideas, concepts, models, and perspectives that address the many challenges. If we receive particularly promising ideas, we plan to work directly with the proposing nonprofits, businesses, government agencies, individuals, or others to negotiate grants to implement their ideas.
HOW TO SEND US YOUR IDEA
Send us your proposal in a one-page summary or 5-minute video and let us know how and why you think your idea will increase Latino participation in sports and recreation in Park City. Please include the following items: description of idea, estimated cost or budget, possible key partnerships, and contact information (name, email, and phone number). We are accepting ideas that can begin implementation from now until the end of 2018.
We expect to negotiate grants to support implementation of the most promising ideas. Grants are likely to range from $5,000 to $50,000, though other funding amounts may be considered depending on the specifics of the idea. We appreciate your interest in joining our efforts to create a more inclusive, integrated, and complete community. Please email submissions to Diego Zegarra at firstname.lastname@example.org by July 28, 2017. For videos, upload to YouTube and send us the link.
