Members of the Women’s Giving Fund don’t just donate their money, they donate their time. As mentors to the girls in our community, they’ve done everything from coaching a Girls on the Run team to coordinating the largest group of non-school related volunteers for Read Across America. The Women’s Giving Fund also created the Power Lunch talks at Ecker Hill Middle School to introduce 6th and 7th grade girls to a variety of career options while also teaching self-esteem and stress relief skills. The lunches averaged over 100 participants, culminating in a zip line adventure for the girls and their mentors.
These mentoring programs have been made possible by an EpicPromise grant, which enabled WGF to match its members with existing mentoring opportunities and to create new mentoring programs for middle school girls. In the fall of 2015, WGF expanded its mentorship to include an after-school program at Treasure Mountain Junior High, which inspires girls to continue in STEM careers with confidence. WGF continues to pair its members with ongoing mentoring opportunities and provides volunteers to the 7th grade class at Ecker Hill for a long-term oral history project.
