Executive Director Roundtable

4 September, 2019 @ 8:30 am - 10:00 am

Are you a nonprofit executive director? Please join us for our quarterly Executive Director Roundtable, share best practices, and connect with your peers. The main session runs from 8:30-9:30, and participants are welcome to stay another half hour for social time afterwards. Roundtables are free to attend. The meeting will be held in classroom 1A at the Blair Education Center in the Park City Hospital. Light breakfast items and coffee are always on hand. More details can be found at parkcitycf.org/nonprofit-roundtables. Please RSVP to Maddy Shear at maddyshear1@gmail.com.

Topic: How are you and your organization doing on Public Policy Advocacy goals and strategy? Are you dipping your toes or diving in? We’ll do a quick self-assessment and then dive in together.

For every nonprofit regardless of mission—arts, health, education, conservation, and more—public policy advocacy is a core to serving the mission. Please join this discussion led by our guests Jen Dailey-Provost and Cheryl Fox.

Jen Dailey-Provost has deep experience in public policy advocacy and will lead a lively discussion. Her passion is palpable! She serves House District 24 in the Utah House of Representatives and is the former Executive Director of the Utah Academy of Family Physicians. Jen passionately works on policy issues including our state’s opioid crisis, the rising cost of living that puts many Utahns’ housing stability at risk, patient safety, and more. Jen’s standing committee assignments include Health and Human Services and Government Operations; her appropriations committee assignment is Social Services, which has a budget of nearly $6 billion.

Cheryl Fox is executive director of Summit Land Conservancy and has extensive experience with public policy advocacy at the local, state, and federal levels.

Fifteen minutes of reading/thinking prep homework:

Please read the Stanford Social Innovation Review article “When Philanthropy Meets Advocacy” and the Stand for Your Mission study guide.

How is your organization doing in this arena? Give your organization an estimated rating: (4) Very active, (3) Active, (2) Minimally active, (1) No work in this area.

Please come ready to share:
– Is your organization defining public policy goals and strategy?
– How would you respond to a very real feeling of, “Don’t have the time.”
– How much does this vary across our nonprofits in arts, healthcare, land protection, etc.?
– Are you collaborating across sectors? Across the aisle? Across nonprofits? Local, state, national?

We will do the same session with your Board members. As Executive Directors your input will be invaluable.

This discussion and the takeaways will be most powerful if we have a cross-section of nonprofits of various sizes/category of missions in attendance. See you at the table!
