Climate Fund

Tackling urgent climate change issues and supporting long-term investment of local climate solutions.

An Initiative to Fight Global Warming

The Climate Fund ensures we have the resources in place to implement local climate solutions to reach net zero emissions. Specifically, these solutions include: reducing emissions through eliminating food waste in our landfill, supporting natural land sinks, and empowering public and private entities with information to work in concert toward our community’s goal of becoming Net Zero by 2030.

Mountain towns like Park City experience the impact of global warming in a visceral way when we have winter seasons without much snow – the essential ingredient for the economic livelihood of our community. Since the 1970s, Park City has lost six weeks of winter temperatures.

While our interests are local, our influence is much bigger than our small population. With the influx of more than a million tourists to Park City every year, we have the opportunity to inspire people who come here from around the world to take climate change lessons and community climate solutions home with them.

Zero Food Waste 2030 Goal

In April 2023, Climate Fund announced an ambitious goal to eliminate food waste in Park City and Summit County by 2030. Waste diversion in our community has a wide range of positive impacts on the community, including reduced greenhouse gas emissions, reduced impact on surface and groundwater, lower costs of city waste management, improved local food security and resilience, and less waste in our already limited landfill.

To reach the Zero Food Waste 2030 goal, the Climate Fund created a strategic plan to act as a roadmap. The plan – created with former Utah State Senator, Salt Lake County Mayor, and Congressman Ben McAdams, and Troy McKinley, founder and CEO of Vericarbon – identifies three main objectives, strategies, and next steps.
