Park City Community Foundation plays a vital role in solving Park City’s greatest challenges. The Community Foundation brings together local nonprofits, caring donors, and community leaders to contribute financial resources and innovative ideas to benefit all the people of Park City—now and in the future. Many critical issues, such as zero food waste, early care and education, equitable access to sports & activities, affordable housing, social equity & inclusion, and mental wellness are essential to our current and future prosperity and receive significant philanthropic support. But to address these issues collaboratively at scale, philanthropy can not do it alone. These critical issues require local public funds as well.
Caring for our neighbors is one of our most important responsibilities as a community. Whether or not any particular individual needs access to any particular type of service or support, all of the decisions we make as a society across spaces and issues affect all our neighbors, regardless of race, income, or background. We care for all our neighbors when we demand healthy environments, access to affordable housing, provide physical and mental healthcare, and ensure availability of affordable, high-quality early care and education. As a community, we can and should invest in a nourishing environment in which all our neighbors can develop and prosper.
Summit County is proposing a ½ percent sales tax increase to assist in funding emergency services, which could generate up to $15 million each year. Approximately 65% of sales tax in our community is generated by non-residents, so nearly two thirds of the revenue generated from this tax would be paid by visitors. Many of the items residents purchase routinely, like gas, medical prescriptions, groceries, and unprepared foods are not subject to this additional tax. This revenue can support law enforcement, emergency medical services, and other vital services impacted by tourism such as solid waste collection and the Three Mile landfill cell expansion.
This additional revenue will also allow the general fund to support programs that care for all our neighbors, including seniors, young children, and our workforce. Support all of your neighbors by learning more about Proposition 18 and getting out the vote.
