FFN 101: Learn about Family, Friend, and Neighbor (FFN) Childcare and How to Become a Provider

What is FFN Childcare?

Friends, Family, and Neighbor Childcare is care is commonly provided by grandparents, aunts, neighbors or trusted friends and often meets the needs of families who work non-traditional hours, need individualized care for a child with special needs, or prefer a provider who knows their language and culture.

FFN providers can benefit from financial assistance programs when they are approved by DWS (Department of Workforce Services).

What are the benefits of getting approved by DWS?

  • Helps ensure the safety of the children in care.
  • Allows families to receive much-needed financial assistance. DWS-approved providers can qualify for the Park City and Summit County scholarship program, as well as childcare subsidies provided by DWS, which helps both providers and parents.
  • For a limited time, there is a $500 incentive for Summit County FFN providers that get approved by DWS.

What is needed to get approved?

  • Demonstrate lawful presence in the U.S.
  • Submit a criminal background check and fingerprinting
  • Complete a free online 2-hour new provider training
  • Hold a current pediatric First Aid and CPR certification
  • Schedule an inspection of the location where care will be provided
  • Each year, in order to renew this approval, the FFN provider must continue with ongoing training and inspection requirements
