April 17, 2025, Park City, Utah – Momentum Recycling, Spoil to Soil, and Park City Community Foundation today announced a partnership deal that will increase the adoption of curbside food composting locally. The Community Foundation helped broker and finance the deal between the two providers that serve Wasatch Back customers with food waste pick-up. Momentum Recycling is acquiring Spoil to Soil’s current customers and will pick up all food waste from residential and business customers across the Wasatch Back, while Spoil to Soil will focus on processing the compost on its local property in Brown’s Canyon.
“As part of our Zero Food Waste initiative, this collaboration takes advantage of the strengths of each of the partners,” said Andy Hecht, Park City Community Foundation’s Climate Fund Manager. “Spoil to Soil has been a local leader in composting organic waste at scale. Momentum Recycling has the infrastructure and customer service to pick up and haul organic waste across the Wasatch Back. Working together, we are helping to put in place an efficient system that can handle our community’s food waste needs.”
Park City Community Foundation launched its Zero Food Waste initiative in June of 2024 with the goal to eliminate and divert all food waste from the Summit County landfill by 2030. This will significantly reduce methane released from food waste in the landfill and save taxpayer dollars.
Starting May 1, current Spoil to Soil customers will have their food waste picked up by Momentum Recycling and should contact its customer service department when needed. For those already signed up with Momentum Recycling, their food waste will now be delivered and composted at Spoil to Soil’s property in Summit County instead of being hauled to the Salt Lake valley. All food waste is accepted, including meat, small bones, eggshells, seeds, and dairy products. Pricing starts at $19.50/month and weekly pickups for most customers will be timed with the regular trash days for each neighborhood. Customers of Spoil to Soil have been alerted to the changes.
“Composting is such a simple and important action that we can all do,” says Kylee Mimbach, owner of Spoil to Soil. “Spoil to Soil is a composting expert and we have been offering this service in our community for many years. We’re excited to collaborate and increase our impact.”
“It has been very exciting to see the growth of our service in greater Park City so far,” said John Lair, CEO of Momentum Recycling. “We have the trucks and drivers ready to serve even more homes and businesses in Summit County, and we’re thrilled to help improve waste diversion and sustainability in the area”
By combining Momentum Recycling and Spoil to Soil customers in the Zero Food Waste initiative, there are now over 1,150 households composting. Now that many households across the Wasatch Back are eligible compost service because of this partnership, the number of homes, HOA’s, and businesses that participate is expected to increase. The monthly cost for residential customers is $19.50/month for 5-gallon bins or $27/month for 16-gallon bins.
