This fall, Park City School District (PCSD), Spoil to Soil, Momentum Recycling, and Park City Community Foundation came together to offer Pumpkin Composting in an effort to divert organic waste away from the landfill.
According to a report released by PCSD, our community managed to divert 19.41 tons of pumpkins, which is nearly a 30% increase from 2023. In other words, Pumpkin Composting was a “smashing success.” We’re grateful to our partners and to the community members who volunteered to make this happen.
Why does it matter?
From an economic standpoint, this diversion saved $2,717 in landfill fees and saved costly space in the landfill.
From an environmental perspective, this feat offset 1.36 tons of methane gas. Methane is much more potent than carbon dioxide gas, and when food is left to rot in landfills it releases methane into the atmosphere.
Sustainability efforts don’t have to stop at pumpkins.
Through its newly launched Zero Food Waste initiative, Park City Community Foundation has set an ambitious community-wide goal to eliminate and divert all food waste from Summit County’s landfill by 2030. Partnering with Momentum Recycling, the Community Foundation launched a new curbside food waste collection to households in 84098 and 84060.
