Free curbside food waste collection for eligible households — January through June 2026

Park City Community Foundation and Summit County have teamed up to launch the Zero Food Waste Prospector Pilot. This case study will help measure the impact, adoption, and efficiency of curbside food waste collection when focused on a single area.
A total of 106 households in the Prospector neighborhood have been invited to participate, including homes on: Comstock Dr., Doc Holiday Dr., Samuel Colt Court, Buffalo Bill Dr., and select homes on Sidewinder. See map on the right.
Park City Community Foundation is proactively reaching out to every home in the pilot area through door-knocking and postcards. If your house is eligible, sign up before January 31, 2026. If you’re already a food waste customer and are an eligible home, you will automatically get free service for six months starting in January.
What You Get
Eligible households that opt-into the pilot will receive:
- A free starter kit with curbside bin (5- or 16-gallon), kitchen caddy, bags, and instructions.
- Free weekly food waste collection for six months, starting in January and running through June. Pickup days are aligned with trash pickup.
- Automatic enrollment for existing Momentum Recycling food waste customers within the pilot area.
Service is provided by Momentum Recycling at no cost during the pilot period, paid for by the Community Foundation with funds granted from Summit County.

Why This Pilot Matters
Since launching Zero Food Waste in June 2024, nearly 1,500 households in Park City and Summit County have already joined the movement, eliminating more than 25 tons of methane and saving over $100,000 in landfill costs. This Prospector Pilot is the first concentrated effort in a single neighborhood and will help shape a countywide expansion.
Why food waste?
- Food waste takes up nearly 50% of the airspace at the Summit County landfill, which is expensive and environmentally harmful.
- Food waste is a major contributor to the climate crisis as it releases methane, a greenhouse gas much more potent than carbon dioxide.
- Diverting food waste protects our water sources from contamination.
- Zero Food Waste is a high-impact and achievable goal.
Why Prospector Neighborhood?
The area offers high density, proximity to main corridors, and a high share of full-time residents, which make it ideal for measuring program adoption.
