Meg Steele, a founding member of Women’s Giving Fund, exemplifies what it means to be a Wonder Woman. Meg set up a small recurring monthly donation when she first joined and it has added up in big ways over the last 12 years. Her monthly gifts have made her eligible to grant honorary memberships to other women+ in the community, including her own stepdaughter, and enabled the collective to continue to grow the size of our grants.
When Women’s Giving Fund was initiated in 2013, the idea of supporting women+ and children in her community was immediately intriguing to Meg. She opted to split her initial $1,000 contribution over 12 months to make the donation more attainable. And as a true Wonder Woman, Meg never hit pause on those monthly gifts, making a significant impact on Women’s Giving Fund today.
“It just comes directly out every month. I don’t have to worry about it, and it doesn’t seem like a lot. So, it’s really cool to get that phone call saying, ‘hey, you’re at another $1,000 and you can pick somebody to sponsor for a Women’s Giving Fund membership,’” Meg said. “It adds up quicker than you think.”
Originally from the Detroit area, Meg has lived in Park City since 2001, when she came here to work during the winter Olympics season. She meant to return to Michigan, but like many of us, she fell in love with this community and decided to make it home. In doing so, Meg is very involved with the local nonprofit community. Currently she is the Vice Chair of Swaner Preserve, co-Chair of Park City Community Foundation’s Live PC Give PC Task Force, and recently termed off the board of Summit Land Conservancy where she continues to be involved in the organization’s board committees.
“I have just really enjoyed volunteering my whole life,” Meg said. “I think some of it’s a bit innate. I really enjoy the social aspect of it—to be able to be with other people volunteering to support a cause.”
Meg has worked for Park City Mountain for nearly 22 years and shares her love of the community, and particularly Women’s Giving Fund, with other resort employees. Meg and Vice President & Chief Operations Officer, Dierdra Walsh, got together and inspired the resort to sponsor additional Women’s Giving Fund memberships for other employees, further spreading her commitment to community engagement.
Meg credits a professor in college for encouraging students to “give back to their community,” and the late councilwoman Candy Erickson for motivating her to apply to join the Recreation Advisory Board back in 2006. Meg hopes to inspire others to do the same. Her advice to those who want to make a difference in their community: start by going to an event hosted by a nonprofit to meet people. Find out what organizations fit with your interests and strengths and ask if they need support. If you’re able to donate – even a small amount each month like she does – you can be a source of reliable and consistent support. Nonprofits thrive when they can count on cyclical donations coming in each month. It all adds up!
