Pumpkin Composting is Back!

Park City School District (PCSD), Park City Community Foundation, and Momentum Recycling have come together to collect pumpkins once again and divert them from the Summit County landfill.

PCSD students and families are welcome to bring their pumpkins to any PCSD school between October 31 and November 12, including:

  • Jeremy Ranch Elementary School
  • McPolin Elementary School
  • Parley’s Park Elementary School
  • Trailside Elementary School
  • Ecker Hill Middle School
  • Park City High School

The community at large can bring their pumpkins to the community bins at Recycle Utah during their business hours.

Additionally, Park City MARC is hosting another Pumpkin Smash event on Saturday, November 8 from 12pm-2pm. Pumpkin remains from that event will also be composted.

Last year, our community successfully diverted 19.41 tons of pumpkins away from the landfill. In 2023, that number was 30,000 pounds of pumpkins from entering the landfill. In total, these efforts have offset 72.8 Metric tons of methane gas, which is a greenhouse gas that is much more potent than carbon dioxide, and saved more than $5,000 in landfill air space.

Food waste, a significant contributor to the climate crisis, takes up nearly 50% of the air space in Summit County landfill. Once there, this valuable resource is wasted forever, occupying costly landfill space. By separating food waste, we not only save money but also protect our climate.

Join the Zero Food Waste movement by signing up for weekly food waste collection at your home. Thanks to a partnership between Park City Community Foundation’s Zero Food Waste initiative and Summit County, eligible Summit County residents can get FREE service in 2025.
