Slopeside Village, an apartment building at the base of Park City Mountain’s Canyon’s Village that provides affordable housing for 1,200 people, has joined the Zero Food Waste movement and will be offering food waste collection to all of its residents.
“Given the number of residents we host at Slopeside Village, we are poised to make a big impact when it comes to food waste diverted from the landfill,” said Tony Tyler, Partner of Columbus Pacific Development and board member of Park City Community Foundation.
Park City Community Foundation’s Climate Fund, with support from Park City Mountain and Vail Resorts EpicPromise, is covering startup costs and the first month of service. This includes countertop caddies and rolls of compostable bags for each of the 170 kitchens, signage, an awareness campaign, and the outdoor bins where the food waste will be picked up weekly by Momentum Recycling. The ongoing costs will be covered by Slopeside Village. Utilities are already included in rent at Slopeside Village, so residents will not see any increased cost for this additional service.
“We are excited to bring the food waste program into Slopeside Village and make it accessible to so many people who live and work in our community,” said Andy Hecht, Climate Fund Manager at the Community Foundation.
Slopeside will roll out the program in December. The Community Foundation will work closely with staff on implementation to ensure that residents know about the program and are aware of what goes in the bins.
With the addition of Slopeside Village, the Community Foundation’s Zero Food Waste initiative is over 740 households and nearing its goal of 1,000 households by the end of 2024.
