Although driving around town, it may seem like more people are here, in reality, the first-grade enrollment numbers at public schools in Summit County have steadily declined since 2019. Since Kindergarten is optional in Utah, the first-grade census may more accurately capture the number of public-school students in our community. This tracks with the generally declining birth rate over the past several years in Summit County; however, there was a slight increase in the live birth rate to Utah residents in Summit County in 2020 and a much larger increase in 2021.

Despite this more recent uptick in live births, the overall population of kids under age 5 living in Summit County has continued to decline since 2016.
