Small Actions, Big Impact This Earth Month
April 10, 2026
This winter felt different. A historically low snow season has been top of mind across Park City, from the trails we love to the businesses and livelihoods that depend on them. It’s a reminder of how connected we are to this place and how much we all have a role in protecting it. The challenges tied to climate and our environment are big. We know that lasting solutions will require systems-level change, innovation, and collaboration across sectors. But we also know this: small, everyday actions matter. And when a community like ours shows up together, those small actions add up to something powerful. This Earth Month, here are some simple ways to get involved right here in Summit County. Don’t let your food scraps go to waste!
Food waste takes up nearly half of the air space in the Summit County landfill, which is both costly and harmful to our environment. By signing up for curbside food scrap collection, you can divert all your food waste and have it picked up weekly. Learn more and sign up at: parkcitycf.org/curbsidecollection There are also community food waste bins that are free to use at Recycle Utah. Refresh your recycling habits
Most of us are already recycling the basics like aluminum and cardboard. But Recycle Utah accepts a surprisingly wide range of items, including soft plastics (think grocery bags, string cheese wrappers, and the bag your bread comes in), water filters, e-waste, shoes, bras, and more. They even have a consignment area to give items a second life. Taking a few extra minutes to sort these items can significantly reduce what ends up in the landfill. See the full list of accepted items: https://recycleutah.org/materials-accepted/ Get inspired and learn something new
Tune into KPCW’s This Green Earth to hear conversations about environmental issues and solutions that matter to our region. It’s an easy way to stay connected while you’re driving, walking, or doing chores. Shows are hosted by Claire Wiley each Tuesday and you can also listen to past episodes: https://www.npr.org/podcasts/608606098/k-p-c-w-this-green-earth Attend the Zero Waste Forum
The Zero Waste Forum is headed to Park City over Earth Day this year. This three-day event from April 21-23 will feature leaders, partners, and community members sharing ideas and progress. It’s a chance to learn, ask questions, and see how collective action is taking shape, locally and beyond. https://zerowasteforum.org/2026-zero-waste-program Show up and get involved There are many ways to lend a hand or get involved through events and fundraisers. Here are just a few:
- Saturday, April 25 from 9am-1:30pm – Swaner Preserve and EcoCenter’s annual cleanup of Kimball Junction and the Preserve.
- Wednesday, April 22 from 5-8pm – Recycle Utah’s Earth Day fundraiser at Twisted Fern.
- Check out the Green Business Program to see which businesses are leading the way and make a point to support them. If you’re a business owner, consider joining.
- You can also shop more intentionally at places like Fulfilled, the Christian Center’s Summit Exchange, and ReStore, where reuse and thoughtful consumption are part of the model.
