What is Trust-Based Philanthropy?

Donors, Education & Trainings, For Nonprofits

This blog post is part 1 of 3 in a series on trust-based philanthropy.

Philanthropy is built on relationships. Between donors and the causes they care about. Between nonprofits and the communities they serve. Between people working together to respond to real needs as they emerge.

Trust-based philanthropy is an approach to giving that recognizes the responsibility that comes with directing resources and centers strong, respectful partnerships between funders and nonprofits. It assumes that the people closest to the work understand the challenges and solutions best.

Rather than focusing on rigid compliance or transactional reporting, trust-based philanthropy prioritizes listening, flexibility, and long-term relationships. It shifts traditional power dynamics by recognizing nonprofit expertise and allowing organizations the flexibility to adapt as conditions change.

One of the clearest expressions of trust-based philanthropy is unrestricted funding. Unrestricted funding is financial support that an organization may use at its discretion to advance its mission, rather than being limited to a specific program or expense category. It allows nonprofits to cover essential operating costs such as staff, rent, technology, and infrastructure while responding to emerging needs in real time. Unlike restricted grants tied to defined activities or line items, unrestricted funding strengthens the overall health and effectiveness of an organization.

Trust-based philanthropy is not a fixed model. It is an ongoing practice rooted in humility, learning, and shared accountability for results.
